Learn to make a watermelon bowl that looks like Stitch! Get our easy and simple step-by-step tutorial to add a fun and festive touch to your next Lilo & Stitch themed dinner or party. This carving project and the tropical fruit salad recipe was featured on our Lilo & Stitch Luau and movie night.
Ingredients
Equipment
1. Place watermelon on a large tray or cutting board. Slice a small slab off the bottom of the watermelon to create a flat base.
2. Next, slice the back third off of the watermelon. This will be the back side of Stitch. Reserve the back third for Stitch’s ears.
3. Hallow out the watermelon with a large spoon. Place the watermelon in a large bowl and set aside for your fruit salad.
4. Sketch Stitch’s mouth with a pencil. Using a pumpkin carving knife, cut out Stitch’s mouth adding jagged irregularly shaped teeth.
5. Using a small paring knife, carefully cut the outer watermelon skin off the front of the teeth.
6. Draw or trace a circle in the center of the head for Stitch’s nose. Using a narrow serrated pumpkin carving tool, etch the outline of Stitch’s nose. Add nostrils.
7. Draw upside down teardrop shapes pointing toward the nose for Stitch’s eyes. Using a small pointed serrated carving tool, etch the whites of his eyes leaving the pupils. Set Stitch’s head aside.
8. Scoop any remaining fruit out of the back side of the watermelon that you reserved earlier for Stitch’s ears. Lay this watermelon shell on a large tray or cutting board.
9. Cut the outer thirds off and add notches to the outer rims. Slightly trim the bottom to create a tear drop shape. The bottom will be fixed to Stitch’s head. Discard the inner third.
10. Using a hammer and 2-3 nails per ear, attach the ears to the head. To do this, place nail on the back bottom side of the ear. Position on the head as desired and hammer the nail through the ear and into the head. Place on a serving tray and fill with fruit salad. Place remaining salad aside and refill as needed.
