Entertain with Magic
Host a fun and memorable Steamboat Willie movie night with our easy and fun party ideas, delicious recipes, and complete menu.
Steamboat Willie is a 1928 American animated short film produced by Walt Disney Studios. It is considered the debut of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie. Steamboat Willie was one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound and one the first cartoons to feature a fully post-produced soundtrack.
In the film, Mickey Mouse steers a steamboat down a river while entertaining his new passenger, Minnie, by playing music out of the menagerie on the boat.
Steamboat Willie was created in black and white. Our decor reflects the vintage vibe of the film and color scheme. We decorated our dining room with this Steamboat Willie wall art from Etsy.
We carried the color scheme throughout the room with a collection of whiteware on the serving buffet, our favorite linen off-white tablecloth, everyday white dishes, and black Mickey DIY placemats.
We love the topiaries showcased at the Disney Parks and thought it would be fun to create a pair of Mickey & Minnie topiaries. We displayed the pair of boxwood topiaries in galvanized steel buckets and housed them in a vintage farmhouse style tray. These topiaries were quick, easy, and inexpensive to create. Get our tutorial to create your own pair!
Our everyday white place settings were centered on cute DIY Mickey placemats. A black napkin with a “life saver” napkin ring was centered on top of each place setting.
Mickey’s Mugs ‘o Milk were created using inexpensive farmhouse mugs, black buttons cut from construction paper, and a black & white striped straw adorned with a paper Mickey. These little details are so simple but add a lot of character to the table.
This fun and easy menu is packed with dishes and treats that reflect the characters and themes showcased in the film. The treats are all simple to create and so much fun to serve. Several of them only require a few ingredients and are no-bake. Get our recipes and instructions below.
Mickey Mouse was the first ever cartoon character to talk and his first words were “hot dogs.” It seemed fitting to incorporate hotdogs into our menu. Walt Disney is known for his love of chili so we decided to serve “Hot Diggity” chili cheese dogs for our movie night.
There are so many delicious chili recipes out there. For chili cheese dogs, our family’s favorite is Amy’s Organic Chili. It pairs perfectly with hot dogs. We like topping it with sour cream, cheese, and jalapenos.
These sweet no bake treats mirror the black and white color scheme of the film. To create these we dipped long pretzel rods and Oreo cookies in white almond bark. We topped the Oreos with a Mickey silhouette using a black gel pen. The long pretzels were decorated with black candy confetti sprinkles.
Milk & cookies are perfect together, just like Mickey & Minnie! These classic sugar cookies are topped with royal icing and black polka dots. We used our favorite sugar cookie and royal icing recipes. The polka dots are created using these black sugar confetti sprinkles. Don’t forget to serve these with a tall glass of ice cold milk for dunking.
Steamboat Willie is a classic and pairs perfectly with some classic Mickey & Minnie cupcakes. These yummy vanilla cupcakes are topped with buttercream, Oreo ears, and candy daisies for Minnie. We used these adorable black and white polka dotted cupcake papers. Get our favorite vanilla cupcake recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction here.
