Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was produced by Walt Disney Pictures in 1937. The film is based on the fairy tale which was penned by The Brothers Grimm and published in their first volume of fairy tales in 1812.
The story is set in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany. This area would be considered part of modern-day Bavaria.
Based on the design of Snow White’s slashed sleeves, the collars worn by Snow White and The Evil Queen, and The Prince’s clothing the story was probably set in the early 1500s during the Holy Roman Empire.
The fairy tale tells of a young girl who escapes a wicked stepmother, and falls under the care of seven dwarfs who work in a mine. One day, she falls into a deep sleep after biting into a poison apple given to her by her evil stepmother. The poison apple causes Snow White to fall into a deep sleep. While resting in her glass coffin, she is discovered and kissed by a prince and the two live happily ever after.
It is believed that Snow White may be based on a real person named Maria Sophia von Erthal who lived in a castle near the town of Lohr am Main in northern Bavaria in the mid-18th century. The village of Lohr is picture below.
After the death of Sophia’s mother, Baroness von Bettendorff, her father Prince Philipp went on to marry Claudia Elisabeth Maria von Venningen, Countess of Reichenstein. She was said to be horrible to her stepchildren.
Interestingly, the castle where they lived was home to a mirror that was uncommonly smooth and even. It was referred to as a ‘talking mirror’ thanks to acoustic manipulation. The mirror reverberated the looker’s words back on to her, giving the appearance that it could speak. The mirror still resides in Lohr Castle, which is now a museum.
Not far from Lohr is a small mining town set among seven mountains called Bieber. The smallest tunnels could only be accessed by very short miners, probably children or dwarfs, who often wore bright hoods.
According to The Lohr Study Group, the glass coffin may be linked to the region’s famous glassworks and the poison apple may be linked to the deadly nightshade poison that grows in abundance in Lohr.
Our tablescape and decor were inspired by Snow White’s signature colors of yellow, blue, and red as well as the charming and quaint cottage of the seven dwarfs.
The table was dressed in a pale yellow tablecloth and featured elements from the forest including a wooden tray, moss balls, and a boxwood garland.
Our centerpiece was a little wooden basket filled with wildflowers and red roses. We created a heart box to reflect The Evil Queen’s box from the movie. Get our tutorial to create your own box here.
For our place settings we used vintage china and flatware. Our china is no longer available, but this dinnerware set is similar and very pretty.
We centered the china on a blue napkin and topped each pace setting with one of Snow White’s candy apples which was tied up with a little red bow.
We decorated our serving buffet with more wildflowers arranged in a vintage blue Ball jar. A bird’s nest gives a nod to Snow White’s wonderful woodland friends.
An antique bowl filled with apples and black metal lantern housing a birch candle reflect the dwarf’s quaint and charming cottage. We displayed our desserts on a wooden tray and cake plate made by my father. I love the unique character of rustic wooden serving pieces.
This menu reflects the Bavarian region where Snow White is set and includes delicious German dishes as well as treats inspired by the film. You can link to recipes below.
We created an eerie green drink in honor of The Evil Queen. Though it looked a bit ghoulish, it was sweet, refreshing, and delicious. We used our lime spritzer recipe and added a cherry. You can get our lime spritzer recipe here.
Yum! These pretzels are so good! They are also easy to make. We recommend this video and recipe from Alton Brown on The Food Network. If you’ve never made homemade pretzels before this tutorial will make it simple. Be sure to serve your pretzels with some stone ground mustard or some cheese sauce. And, most importantly, serve them right out of the oven!
This salad reminds us of what Snow White might have planted in her own garden: Butter Lettuce, crisp sliced cucumbers, sweet carrots, and plump juicy little tomatoes. We topped our salad with a creamy herb dressing. We love this simple recipe from Martha Stewart for a creamy salad dressing base with six flavor variations.
In the film, Snow White serves beef stew. We chose a delicious meatless alternative, mushroom stew, and paired it with homemade German potato dumplings. This dish was the quintessential comfort food: thick, rich, warm, and bursting with flavor. You can get the recipe for the mushroom stew from Where Is My Spoon. We used this recipe from Taste of Home for our potato dumplings. The dumplings are a perfect pairing for the rich stew.
We couldn’t settle on one dessert so we opted for a trio of miniature delights! We served mini apple cranberry pies, enchanted apple cupcakes, and Snow White’s candy apples. Link below for our recipes and tutorials for these three delicious desserts!
Apple cranberry pie offers the perfect combination of tart and sweet! This is my own recipe that I’ve adapted for 4-inch pies. We used small fondant plungers to cut our flowers and leaves to embellish the dainty pies with a beautiful floral design. Get our recipe here.
These cupcakes are far from poisonous but the sugary coating makes them look magical! Link to our tutorial for these adorable cupcakes here.
These apples are absolutely beautiful! We featured them on our Disney Villain’s party as well but they got a new look for this party with a dainty bow. They are sweet, so pretty, and very fun {and easy} to make. Link to our recipe here.
