Traditional Hawaiian luaus are often held in honor of a major event such as a wedding. In the Hawaiian culture, feasting and entertainment could go on for days.
Traditional luaus feature a roast pig, seafood, tropical drinks, a pupu platter, coconuts, pineapples and other tropical fruits, and great entertainment such as Hawaiian music, hula dancers, or fire dancers.
It’s easy to host a luau at home with our simple decor ideas and tasty no-fuss recipes. Consider decorating with tiki torches, tropical flowers, coconuts & pineapples, bamboo mats, jungle leaves, and shells. Get our recipes and shopping links below.
Ask guests to dress in tropical fare and welcome them with a flower lei and coconut drinking cup filled with a delicious drink. Entertain guests with a real flower lei making station, great music, and some hula dancing.
Create a light and tropical mood with a light orange tablecloth. A cane wrapped vase is filled with floral foam, fresh moss, real touch orchids and tropical leaves. DIY pineapple vases filled with fresh hosta leaves and gold candle sticks with pink and white tapers round out the tablescape. Glass votive holders and a small round bud vase with an orchid carry the tropical theming to the individual place settings.
The place settings are simple with Amazon basics white dinner and salad plates. A hot pink hemstich linen napkin is layered between the plates for a pop of color. Bamboo cutlery as well as seagrass glass holders add more tropical details. A coconut sipper is dressed up with a real touch orchid and is centered on each salad plate.
We have crafted a delicious, fresh and no fuss Luau menu based on traditional Luau fare. Get the recipes we used below.
This layered Hawaiian berry smoothie is as pretty as it is tasty. The bottom layer is made up of orange, bananas, and honey while the top layer is comprised of strawberries, bananas, and yogurt. It is like a dessert in a glass. Delicious! You can get our recipe here.
Before we planned our luau I had never heard of a pu-pu platter. This platter is simple to assemble and will add to the festive atmosphere of your luau. So, what is a pu-pu platter? It is a tray of American Chinese or Hawaiian meat appetizers. We chose to include vegetable eggrolls, pork dumplings, chicken satay, coconut breaded shrimp, and pineapple. Each appetizer was served with a dipping sauce and garnished with green onions. Delicious!
This carved Stitch watermelon was my favorite element of our luau! It was a so much fun to create and display. It displayed a tasty tropical fruit salad for our Lilo & Stitch luau and movie night. Making it was surprisingly easy and only required a few tools. Get our step-by-step tutorial here to create this festive character!
A traditional Luau includes roasted pork, but these Hawaiian chicken sliders are just as delicious and so easy to make. We used this chicken recipe from Key Ingredient but we shredded our chicken and served it on a Hawaiian roll. We served some simple yet very tasty sweet potato spears from 3 Boys and a Dog on the side.
In the film Lilo & Stitch each order a piece of chocolate cake. Stitch devours enjoys both he and Lilo’s servings and then spits them out and tries to fix them back up. It’s a fun scene so we couldn’t resist the opportunity to add a chocolate cake to our menu. We added peanut butter mousse between the layers and frosted it with Stitch blue buttercream for a fun twist. Get our delicious chocolate cake recipe here.
