Entertain with Magic
Deep in the forests of Salem you’ll find the cottage of the Sanderson Sisters. Their Spell Book, potion ingredients and cauldron still remain. Will they be back? No one knows.
Create a bewitching Hocus Pocus dinner or movie night for your friends and family. We share a full menu, recipes, decor inspiration, and shopping links at the end of the post.
Transform your dining room into the Sanderson Sisters’ cottage with lots of spooky details – a cauldron filled with dead flowers, bottles of potion ingredients, their spell book, and the infamous black flame candle.
Create a colonial-inspired tablescape filled with vintage spooky details. Start with a linen tablecloth draped in ivory cheesecloth.
Create a centerpiece featuring a black cauldron filled with dried foliage like black thistle and Chinese lanterns. This cauldron is ceramic and was purchased at Michaels, but an iron version which is even more authentic can be purchased on Amazon.
Pewter accents make a nod to the colonial setting. We showcased our pewter candle holders and pitcher. Check local second hand shops and antique shops for similar pieces. We added a raven, a plastic skull and some vintage books.
Pair your cauldron centerpiece with a DIY black flame candle. We created ours using this printable from Eat the Dead. We simply printed their pdf on plastic inkjet transparency and wrapped it around a battery operated ivory pillar candle.
Continue the colonial inspiration with silver scrollwork chargers. The scalloped edges have a nice colonial look. Layer black dinner plates, orange salad plates, and Halloween appetizer plates. We got the appetizer plates at Target but Amazon offers Lenox’s Vintage Halloween dessert plates – one of my personal favorites.
Spooky skeleton hand goblets are one of my favorite Dollar Tree finds. They are so fun to use on a Halloween tablescape and are a bargain at $1.25 each. If your Dollar Tree is out they are also available on Amazon.
The last fun detail in this place setting is black napkins tied with jute and embellished with adorable miniature witch brooms. These brooms make a really fun favor for guests to take home after the party.
Be sure to continue the decor into the areas of your dining space. We added decorative bats to the wall and hung witch hats from the ceiling. A black feather wreath adorned with a butterfly is hung over our black mirror.
We also displayed DIY bottles of potion ingredients, a beautiful leather bound Spell Book, a Sanderson Sisters tin sign, and a terrarium filled with a skull and potion ingredients, and mosses and dried florals from the woods. We were extremely impressed with the leather spell book that we purchased through Amazon. It is beautifully made and the details are gorgeous.
To create the potion bottles we designed a set of custom potion jar labels and added them to our favorite glass bottles. The printables are available in our Halloween cookbook.
Our menu was filled with dishes inspired by the themes and characters of the film. Get all the details below.
Sarah’s Bewitching Cranberry Fizz is a playful and magical drink inspired by Sarah Sanderson. This fizzy drink captures her enchanting and sweet personality with a combination of cranberry flavors, a little spiciness, and sparkling bubbles. This recipe is featured in our Halloween cookbook.
This Sanderson Sisters charcuterie board is so fun and easy to build. You’ll need brie, sliced salami, cubed Monterrey Jack, blackberries, grapes, and assorted crackers and chips. This board is perfect for a Hocus Pocus party or movie night. Get the easy tutorial here.
Winifred is always up to some type of mischief. This savory Hocus Pocus galette depicts her cauldron full of a frothy green potion under the light of a full moon. This recipe is featured in our Halloween cookbook.
Juicy plums, rich gorgonzola cheese, toasted walnuts, and plump blackberries are topped with a rich and tangy balsamic vinaigrette for a fresh, vibrant, and flavorful fall salad that we think Mary would enjoy. This recipe is featured in our Halloween cookbook.
The Spell Book from Hocus Pocus was given to Winifred by the Devil himself. It was written in blood and had a cover made of human skin. Eeek! These Hocus Pocus Spell Book Brownies are far from evil but are devilishly delightful and very fun to make. This recipe is featured in our Halloween cookbook.
