Nothing says Minnie Mouse like red and white polka dots! Learn how to create your own DIY Minnie Table Runner in about an hour with this easy beginner sewing project.
A table runner can add so much personality to your table! Today I’d like to show you how to make a red and white polka dot table runner inspired by Minnie Mouse.
This easy project will require a sewing machine, iron and ironing board, thread, and fabric 20 inches longer than the length of the table you want to make the runner for.
2. Cut the selvage edge off and discard.
3. Measure your table and cut fabric 29 inches wide and 20 inches longer than your table. This will create a 14” wide runner that hangs down 9” past the table on either end.
4. Lay the fabric flat and fold in half the long way with the right sides together.
5. Using an Olfa mat and rotary cutter or a yard stick, trim so the ends are square and even.
6. Add pins along the three raw edges. You will not need to stitch the folded edge.
7. Plan to leave a 4-inch opening at one of the ends. You will use this opening to turn the runner right side out. I like to mark this opening using pins in the opposite direction as a reminder.
8. Stitch using a ½” seam allowance along the raw edges leaving a four inch opening at one of the ends.
9. The raw edges won’t be exposed, but it is a good idea to finish the raw edges using a zigzag stitch, a pinking shears, or a serger. This will ensure the edges won’t fray when you launder the runner.
10. Clip the corners. This will help your finished corners to be more crisp and smooth.
11. Turn the runner right side out and press flat. Take care to press out the corners as crisply as possible. You can use a pencil to push out the corners if needed.
12. Fold the unsewn end in so that raw edges are hidden. Iron flat.
13. Top stitch along the edges. I chose to stitch ¼ inch from the edge using white thread. Depending on the look you want, you can stitch anywhere from ¼-inch to 1-inch from the edge.
To make my runner, I purchased 2 yards of fabric from Joann Fabrics at $5 per yard. With the remaining fabric, I was able to make 4 coordinating polka dot napkins. The project took me just over an hour.
