Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll about a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar creatures. It is delightfully imaginative and whimsical.
Walt Disney animated this popular classic which was released on July 26, 1951. It was Disney’s 13th full length animated feature and is known today as one of his best animated classics. It is filled with memorable characters such as the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts. In addition, Alice in Wonderland has a fantastic music score boasting 14 musical numbers.
We were inspired by the beautiful flowers in Wonderland so we chose to host our Alice in Wonderland dinner in our garden during the summer when our flowers were in full bloom. We ate on the patio surrounded by beautiful blooms, bright sunshine, and the sounds of nature.
We dressed the table in a blue tablecloth and moss runner. Small vases of fresh flowers from our garden dotted the tabletop. In addition, we featured beautiful oversized silk blooms in fuchsia, lavender and blue. The giant blooms were my favorite element of this tablescape.
Anna and I found a darling set of tea cups & plates at a local thrift shop. They are adorned with pretty flowers in fuchsia, purple, blue, and yellow and add a beautiful vintage touch. We paired them with our antique silver flatware and some beautiful vintage beverage napkins.
In the film, Alice drinks magical blue liquid in a vial labeled “Drink Me.” We added a miniature glass bottle of blue liquid topped with a cork and “Drink Me” label. It was such a fun detail and, thankfully, didn’t result in any frightful experiences.
We showcased a special centerpiece in honor of the villainous Queen of Hearts. Our cloche held an arrangement of red & white roses and red hypericum along with some playing cards and the infamous key.
Alice in Wonderland has so many fun characters! We enjoyed creating dishes to honor them. Read on to see our full menu and get the recipes we used.
“Crawling at your feet,’ said the Gnat (Alice drew her feet back in some alarm), `you may observe a Bread-and-Butterfly. Its wings are thin slices of Bread-and-butter, its body is a crust, and its head is a lump of sugar. ‘
We had fun creating these cute Bread-and-Butterflies. Get our recipe here.
Then it got down off the mushroom, and crawled away in the grass, merely remarking as it went, ‘One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter. ‘
In Alice in Wonderland there is a magic mushroom that can make Alice change size. We had fun creating mushrooms from cherry tomatoes and string cheese. They were super cute and very tasty but, thankfully, not of the magical variety. Get our recipe here.
In the film, The Queen of Hearts plays a game of Wonderland croquet with live hedgehogs (balls) and flamingos (mallets). In the spirit of a game, we created a mini chess board of tea sandwiches: goat cheese-apple-turkey on white and herbed cream cheese-cucumber on pumpernickel rye. Get our favorite tea sandwich recipes here.
“Who’s been painting my roses red?
WHO’S BEEN PAINTING MY ROSES RED?
Who dares to taint with vulgar paint the royal flower bed?”
We just couldn’t host an Alice in Wonderland dinner without creating a signature cupcake for The Queen of Hearts. Our almond cupcakes are filled with cherry filling and feature red rose tops and The Queen’s crown adorned with fondant hearts. Get our recipe here.
“Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words “EAT ME” were beautifully marked in currants.”
We had so much fun creating cookies for our Alice in Wonderland dinner: Alice’s dress and pinafore apron, pocket watches, rabbits, and “Eat Me” cookies in various shapes and sizes. The classic sugar cookies were topped with our favorite royal icing. Get our recipe here.
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war with reality.” — The Cheshire Cat
We love Cheshire Cat Tails from The Cheshire Cat Cafe in Magic Kingdom and created some at home for this party. They are so delicious! Light puff pastry is layered with vanilla pastry cream and chocolate and topped with icing. They are divine! We used the recipe from The Unofficial Disney Parks Cookbook and highly recommend it.
