Entertain with Magic
Pocahontas is one of our family’s favorites! Not only is it a beautiful and inspiring film, but it offers fun opportunities to learn more about Native American culture.
We share all the recipes and tablescape & decor ideas you need to host this dinner for your friends and family. In addition, we also share some bonus family activities to learn about Native American culture at the end of the post.
For our tablescape we displayed a bountiful harvest of gourds and pumpkins in sage green, white, and pale orange. We dressed our table in a white linen tablecloth and added sprigs of lambs ear along with some carved wooden candle sticks and deer antlers.
We incorporated some little woodland animals into our tablescape. They reminded us of Pocahontas’s animal friends in the movie and added a bit of whimsy to our meal.
We kept the place settings simple with white dinnerware and coral colored napkins. We centered each place setting on a jute placemat and topped it with a white pumpkin.
In real life, Pocahontas likely ate wild game, root vegetables, berries, shellfish, squash, beans, corn, nuts, rice, and bread made of cornmeal. We created a cozy fall dinner menu inspired by these flavors. Get all the recipes below.
A charcuterie board is one of our favorite ways to start a meal. It offers something for everyone. In just a few minutes, you can put together a delicious and beautiful appetizer with items from your pantry. This charcuterie board is themed for fall with mini pumpkins, fall fruits, nuts, meats, crackers, and leaf shaped cheeses.
One of our favorite recipes for this dinner was Three Sisters Stew. Native Americans were known for growing squash, corn, and beans together. The corn would provide a support for the beans to climb, the squash would shade the other plants, and the beans would return nitrogen to the soil. These three companion plants were called the three sisters.
The stew is easy to make, it uses simple ingredients , and it is quite tasty. Get the recipe from Brand New Vegan.
We served Ina Garten’s Herbed Roasted Turkey Breast with all the fixings: Perfect Cranberry Sauce, Savory Cornbread Stuffing, roasted fingerling potatoes, sweet corn, and lemon Brussels sprouts. These are some of our family’s favorite Thanksgiving dishes, but they’re a wonderful treat anytime.
These lovely mini blueberry galettes use wild blueberries. They taste like warm blueberry pie but are even easier to make. We use wild blueberries and love how vibrant they taste. Get our recipe here.
These pumpkin spice cupcakes were inspired by Colors of the Wind from the film. Each cream filled cupcake is topped with cream cheese frosting and a trio of candy leaves in green, peach, and pink. The pumpkin spice flavor combined with cream cheese frosting makes these cupcakes perfect for any fall themed party or dinner. Get our recipe here.
These delicious mini chocolate pumpkin pies have become a favorite dessert buffet offering in our family and are perfect for a fall dinner, a Thanksgiving dessert board or buffet or a Pocahontas movie night. Rich chocolate pairs beautifully with your favorite fall flavors. Get the recipe here.
