Brave is set during the 10th century in the beautiful Scottish Highlands and is inspired by the rich traditions of Scotland. Our decor was inspired by the rugged beauty of the woods, traditional tartan plaid, and Merida’s unwavering tenacity.
Our tablescape reflects the lush foliage of the woods. We used a our favorite linen hemstitch tablecloth as a backdrop for decor elements such as rustic wood chargers and votive holders, a leaf garland, and wild flowers in golds and orange .
The tablescape was inspired by the rugged woods that Merida loved. Wood accents were combined with lush green foliage and vibrant wildflowers. Poppies in gold and orange mirror Merida’s beautiful hair.
You can purchase the wooden votives we used here. Several handmade wooden serving trays and a cake plate housed our desserts on our buffet and a charcuterie on the table. This set of wooden trays in various sizes is available through Amazon.
To create the centerpiece we filled an antique pedestal bowl with oasis and moss. We used eucalyptus stems and various greens as a base and featured poppies in golds and oranges as well as some little white wildflowers. The poppies and white flowers were part of our collection but the eucalyptus stems can be purchased here.
A eucalyptus garland was spread down the center of the table with small votives in wooden holders interspersed.
A rustic charcuterie board, a jar of breadsticks, and some fresh fruit were added. Guests could munch throughout the meal on bread & honey, cheese, fruit, and nuts.
Basic white dinnerware sits atop rustic wooden chargers. The chargers were custom made from trees on my parent’s property and are some of my most cherished pieces. You can find similar rustic wooden chargers here.
We topped each place setting with a green tartan plaid napkin. These napkins were a perfect tie in to the Scottish setting of the film. You can purchase the napkins here.
We brought in gold accents through the flatware and Moscow mules. The flatware can be purchased here. The Moscow Mules are no longer available, but a similar design can be purchased on Amazon.
This delicious menu was inspired by the foods featured in the film. It’s filled with tasty and easy to prepare dishes. Get all our recipes below to create this Medieval inspired feast!
Merida’s Fire Falls Spritzer is a beautiful layered drink that reflects her signature colors of dark teal and orange. It is light, refreshing and subtly sweet. Click here to get our recipe. We share ingredients fro both a mocktail version and a cocktail version.
In the film Merida is shown several times enjoying apples. It was common to grow fruits in the orchard outside the Medieval castle so we opted to offer a simple fruit & cheese board using a rustic wooden tray.
Our board included Edam cheese, roasted almonds, Irish soda bread, bread sticks (not pictured here), honey, and grapes, Granny Smith apples, clementines & dried apricots. Not all the ingredients are historically accurate, but we enjoyed the combination of flavors, textures, and colors.
The fruit & cheese board was placed in the center of the table to allow guests to graze and nibble throughout the meal.
During the dinner scene in Brave, Merida’s family sits down to a feast of roast fish, quail, haggis, and other types of meat. We didn’t have access to quail so we opted to serve a roast chicken as an alternative. Any type of roast poultry would be lovely for this meal depending on what you enjoy.
We paired the roast chicken with a medley of roasted root vegetables: orange, yellow and purple carrots, beets, and Yukon Gold potatoes. To prepare the vegetables, we cut them into large chunks and tossed them with olive oil, dried thyme, and salt & pepper. We roasted them at 425 degrees for around 20 minutes until tender and tossed them once half way through roasting.
The chicken was roasted separately. If you are short on time and want to offer chicken you can pick up a rotisserie chicken at your local deli or grocery store. If you’re looking for a good recipe for a roast chicken we recommend this one from Martha Stewart.
In the film, Merida and her brothers are shown trying to steal a type of roll topped with icing and a candied cherry. These rolls are inspired by the traditional Scottish Empire Biscuit. These iced rolls are quite delicious and made of a sweet, light pillowy dough topped with thick icing and a candied cherry. We think you’ll love this recipe that uses my Grandma’s own delicious sweet yeast dough.
These Merida’s spell cakes may or may not turn you into a bear. The little blueberry tartlettes are packed with flavor. Plump juicy wild blueberries from the north woods are encased in a flaky buttery crust and are topped with powdered sugar and blueberry preserves. Get our recipe here.
