Ingredients
Equipment
1. Place watermelon on a large tray or cutting board. Slice a small slab off the bottom of the watermelon to create a flat base.
2. Next, slice the back third off of the watermelon. This will be the back side of the hippo. Reserve the back third for the Hippo’s ears and eyes.
3. Hallow out the watermelon with a large spoon. Place the watermelon in a large bowl and set aside for your fruit salad.
4. Sketch the hippo’s mouth with a pencil. Using a sharp knife, cut out the hippo’s mouth.
5. Draw markings on the hippo’s face. Using a narrow serrated pumpkin carving tool, etch the markings on the hippos face and create nostrils.
6. Cut small triangular shapes for the eyes and ears. Trim the point off the bottom of the ears and slightly round the top. Using a pumpkin carving tool, etch a design into the center of the ears. Discard the remaining watermelon shell.
7. Using a hammer and nails, attach the ears to the head. To do this, place nail on the back bottom side of the ear. Position on the head as desired and hammer the nail through the ear and into the head.
8. Using a hammer and nails, attach the eyes to the face. Place a toothpick in each eye, trim with scissors, and add a blueberry pupil.
9. Place four toothpicks in the mouth and add marshmallow teeth.
10. Place on a serving tray and fill with fruit salad. Place remaining salad aside and refill as needed.
