Tangled is loosely based on the German fairy tale, Rapunzel, by the Brothers Grimm. Disney produced the computer animated film in 2010. In the film, Rapunzel is the princess of the kingdom of Corona and is known for her long, magical, golden hair.
As a young child Rapunzel was abducted and locked away in a remote tower for 18 years. Aided by a handsome thief named Flynn Rider, Rapunzel escapes from the tower to explore the outside world and, ultimately, discovers her forgotten identity as the princess of Corona.
Tangled is set in the fictional kingdom of Corona. Though Corona is not a real place it is undeniably influenced by specific European cultures. No one country has all the elements of the setting of Tangled, but according to Disney Fandom, by looking at the architecture, nature, landscape, politics, and the styles of dress in Tangled, the best fit for a real-world Kingdom of Corona would be along the Baltic Sea coast of Germany and Poland at some point from 16th to the 18th century.
According to Pretty Prudent, French artist Laurent Ben-Mimoun who created the concept art for Tangled started with the vision of a Renaissance castle from which Rapunzel could let down her hair, recalling Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. He added medieval and French Renaissance influences like small round towers inspired by Château de Chenonceau as well as hints of modern architecture.
We were inspired by the beautiful glade surrounding Rapunzel’s tower and the magical glowing lanterns released on her birthday each year. We filled our space with mounds of lilacs, lavender and Queen Anne’s Lace, ivy, glowing candles, and gold accents.
We dressed the table in an off-white linen tablecloth and topped it with fresh lilacs from our garden along with a grapevine garland adorned with ivy, lavender, and Queen Anne’s lace. The garland was intertwined with lilac and lavender ribbons to mimic the look of braids. Lavender glass votives and brass candlesticks with off white tapers added warmth to the tablescape.
For our table settings we chose ivory china centered atop gold chargers, vintage silver flatware, and simple glass goblets. We chose lavender cotton napkins tied with sheer ribbon and a sprig of lavender.
We displayed our trio of lemon desserts amid glowing pillar candles as a nod to the lanterns released on Rapunzel’s birthday each year. A Sundrop Flower, the magical glowing lily-type flower from the film, was displayed in a glass box.
We created a menu celebrating the fresh vibrant flavors Rapunzel experienced outside the tower. The sweet and lively flavors of fresh berries, apples, lemons, greens are offset by the centerpiece of the menu, creamy and comforting nudel gratin. Get links to all the recipes below.
We focused on light and fresh flavors for this menu and are so excited to share our lemon blackberry spritzer recipe with you. The tart lemon flavor was offset by the sweet blackberry syrup. A bit of seltzer was added to give the drink a sparkle and fizz. We served the drink over ice garnished with a lemon slice and some fresh blackberries. It was delicious, refreshing, and lovely. Strawberry soup is a Disney fan favorite, but interestingly, cold fruit soups are also an Eastern European culinary tradition. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to feature this delicious Disney recipe on our Tangled menu.
We made beautiful braided breadsticks flavored with cinnamon, sugar, and butter and studded with raisins as an accompaniment. The light flaky texture of the breadsticks was perfect for this sweet and rich strawberry soup.

Our family was first introduced to this recipe for Nudel Gratin in Epcot’s Germany pavilion. This German twist on classic mac ‘n cheese is the cheese lover’s dream! It’s creamy, rich, comforting, and very cheesy! You can get Disney’s own recipe here.
The Brother’s Grimm fairy tale actually starts before Rapunzel was born. Her pregnant mother had a severe craving for some fresh green that grew only in the witch’s garden. Rapunzel’s father went to collect the greens and got caught by the witch. Their punishment was to hand over the infant Rapunzel to the witch. And, thus, the greens gained the name Rapunzel after the child.
The common name for this green is Lamb’s Ear and we found a delicious salad recipe featuring this green on Eat Smarter’s site. The salad is composed of greens, homemade gorgonzola croutons, apple, mushrooms and walnuts with a delicious citrus vinaigrette. Get their recipe here.
Our trio of miniature lemon desserts give a nod not only to Rapunzel’s signature colors of purple and gold, but also to the prevalent theme of light throughout the film. We chose lemon curd tartlets topped with a plump juicy blackberry, classic lemon squares, and moist lemon blueberry cupcakes topped with lavender cream choose frosting. Get the recipes below.
These dainty little lemon tartlets are bursting with flavor! The light pastry shells are filled with fresh lemon curd and topped with a juicy blackberry. We prefer making our lemon curd from scratch, but you can also purchase lemon curd and pre-made tart shells if you’re in a pinch for time. Get our recipe here.
Lemon squares are easy to bake and are the perfect dessert for a garden party or picnic. The soft lemon filling paired with the rich crumbly shortbread will bring a smile every time! We love my mom’s recipe! Get her recipe for this classic favorite here.
This lemon blueberry cake recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction is a showstopper! The texture is perfectly moist and the vibrant lemon flavor pairs perfectly with sweet blueberries. We topped our cupcakes with lavender cream cheese frosting, but Sally has a blackberry frosting that is also quite good. This 3 layer cake recipe will make a large batch of cupcakes so halve it if you like. Get the recipe here.
